With spring just around the corner, it’s a good time to remember that bears will soon be coming out of their dens. As we all start getting back outside to enjoy the warmer weather, a little awareness goes a long way in staying safe.
Bears are especially hungry this time of year, so it’s important to store food and scented items properly, hanging these high in a tree is ideal. When hiking or spending time in the woods, make some noise as you go. Most bear encounters happen when a bear is surprised or feels threatened.
Always keep a safe distance from any bears you see, and be extra cautious if cubs are nearby. Mother bears are very protective in the spring. If you’re out with dogs, keep them close and preferably on a leash to avoid unwanted encounters.
It’s also worth remembering that black bears are usually more afraid of us than we are of them. Given the chance, they’ll often move away before you even notice they’re there, especially if they hear you coming.
As we head into spring, stay safe and enjoy getting back outdoors!
